Hello there,
I am Janet Murata, the Winnipeg-based artist behind Michiko Craft. Since picking up a calligraphy pen in 2009, I have been dedicated to creating meaningful moments through my art—offering live event calligraphy, custom commissions, and workshops rooted in the beauty of handwritten expression.
My work is rooted in the belief that the smallest details can leave the most lasting impression. I am drawn to a quiet, intentional approach, often inspired by Japanese aesthetics, natural textures, and a sense of refined simplicity—creating pieces and experiences that feel both elevated and deeply personal.
Before fully dedicating myself to this practice, I worked as a pediatric nurse, providing home care for children and their families. During that time, I was present for many deeply meaningful moments, which shaped the way I think about care, connection, and detail.
I began creating my own cards when I realized how few felt appropriate for those occasions, and started adding calligraphy—writing each name by hand as a small, thoughtful gesture. It was through those moments that I came to understand the quiet impact of seeing one’s name written with intention—how something simple can carry a sense of beauty, dignity, and care.
Through Michiko Craft, I collaborate with brands, teams, and individuals to create experiences that invite connection and creativity. From live, on-site personalization—including calligraphy and engraving—to hands-on workshops in calligraphy, origami, and watercolour, each offering is designed to be inclusive, engaging, and thoughtfully executed.
My work has been trusted by globally recognized brands and featured in notable publications, reflecting a commitment to both artistry and experience.
At its core, my practice is about more than beautiful writing—it is about creating moments that are felt, remembered, and carried forward.
Let’s create together.
